Those voices in my head were nattering again, and I consciously chose to listen to the quiet one that had something good to say.

This painting began as a collaborate effort with the brave people who stopped by to help me out at the last FosterMAK show.
One of my favourite things about painting live is encouraging people to use a paintbrush, especially the ones who say, “You don’t want me… I will ruin your painting!
But the best thing, by far, is sharing the canvas with children who fully embrace the title of ARTIST. There are many elements of this painting that were done by the children who helped me out that day, just as much of my art is created by the child within me.
“Self Love”, 24″ x 24″, acrylic on cradled wood panel, $720. Purchase here.

I think a lot about life and why I’m here. A recent death in the one of my communities has me contemplating this more than usual. The conclusion I am quickly coming to is that I am here to experience the physical world: through emotion, through connection, and especially, through this home that is my body. It guides me to dance, to experience pleasure and pain to my fullest, and today, to paint. I will keep following my body’s cues.
“Spring”, 6″ x 6″, acrylic on canvas. $160.

I am struggling today with this- feeling loved. I was having a really hard time with this painting, and every time I put on a layer that I thought was a mistake (and yes, I know: no mistakes), I kept putting myself down (pretty sure I called myself fuckface at one point).
Because of this, I feel like an absolute failure at the whole self love thing, which then makes me wonder if I am getting anywhere with it. Maybe I don’t need to get anywhere. My ego keeps me stuck. It keeps me searching outside myself for answers, for love, for permission, for sanity.
So I keep painting to remind myself that I am loved.
“I am loved”, acrylic on canvas, 5″ x 5″ $140.

It’s #tbt and time to PAY WHAT YOU WANT!
I used to feel there was something missing from my art – the feeling of wild, carefree fun and play. Now I can see that it’s not so much that there was something lacking, but that I just hadn’t tapped into it yet. My older paintings show another side of me: the controlled, organized, methodical nature in me, but I think the colours give a hint to my other parts.

I continually need to remind myself that just because I this isn’t “serious” art, doesn’t mean it isn’t important. I have so much fun playing with colour. And as my wonderful friend Lindsay Murdoch reminded me, FUN IS IMPORTANT.
