A few nights ago, I found myself contracted, and wishing Braden would do more, show me more love, touch me more, and reach out to me, and I realized how my contracted desires are one of the ways I project my story about “not being good enough” onto him. For me to feel more love, I dropped the expectation that Braden would do things for me, and did them for him instead. This simple turn-around opened my heart, and brought us into connection again.

Self Love

This painting began as a collaborate effort with the brave people who stopped by to help me out at the last FosterMAK show.

One of my favourite things about painting live is encouraging people to use a paintbrush, especially the ones who say, “You don’t want me… I will ruin your painting!

But the best thing, by far, is sharing the canvas with children who fully embrace the title of ARTIST. There are many elements of this painting that were done by the children who helped me out that day, just as much of my art is created by the child within me.

The other day, someone said, “It must be hard to let your babies [paintings] go, and I responded that I don’t consider them to be my babies. Once I have created them, I allow them to go out into the world, to become part of someone else’s world; I am not attached to them in a clinging way. The day after this conversation, I read this in Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Big Magic”:

“Your creative work is not your baby; if anything, you are its baby. Everything I have ever written has brought me into being. Every project has matured me in a different way. I am who I am today precisely because of what I have made and what it has made me into. Creativity has hand-raised me and forged me into an adult.”

However, I do have my favourites – there are some paintings I wish to keep around a little longer, or to be able to visit once in awhile. This is one of them. I feel especially happy about finding a new home for these favourites of mine.
