They remind me that all the voices in my head that are telling me what to do aren’t really my own; they belong to others. My real voice comes from deeper inside my body, and usually it doesn’t speak in words. <3

I Love You.

When I begin a painting, I start with the intention of having fun, and during the process, I often find myself thinking about the “right” way to paint: this is a sure sign that I have jumped off the fun train and back onto the train of perfection. The perfection track has a deep grooves and it can be difficult to find my way back out. Lately, I have been thinking of my 6-year old self and telling her she is loved. That seems to help a bit.

I Can Do Anything

I allowed myself to play this morning. I noticed lots of judgements (“not good enough”), and lots of pressure (“this isn’t real art”, and “who would want this?”). But there were also moments of pure enjoyment, relaxation, and fun.

Last year, I spent a lot of time focusing on my sexuality, both in life and in art; I was able to begin healing so many old shameful stories. One of the biggest lessons for me, as is the case in just about everything I do, is to stay present to what is actually happening for me right now. No need to stop the pleasure, no need to dredge up worry, no need to stay rooted in the past, no need to keep proving that I am unlovable, ugly or undesirable.

Studio Tuesday: I am loved.

I am struggling today with this- feeling loved. I was having a really hard time with this painting, and every time I put on a layer that I thought was a mistake (and yes, I know: no mistakes), I kept putting myself down (pretty sure I called myself fuckface at one point).

Because of this, I feel like an absolute failure at the whole self love thing, which then makes me wonder if I am getting anywhere with it. Maybe I don’t need to get anywhere. My ego keeps me stuck. It keeps me searching outside myself for answers, for love, for permission, for sanity.

So I keep painting to remind myself that I am loved.
